He’d become my rescuer, my savior. A dark angel, with blood on his hands and fire in his eyes.

When I first read the blurb of this book, my heart started beating faster and I thought “wow, this is going to break me” and it did ! This review is really hard for me to write because even though I really loved this dark, thrilling book, there were parts that were so difficult, I can’t describe them.

The plot

This story is simply about Revenge. Three years ago Nick Ryder had everything he could dream of. A loving wife and a beautiful son. One crucial night everything he ever loved gets brutally taken away from him. His wife. His son. His Soul. He made a promise that he would get his revenge and to make the men suffer who ripped his heart apart. And this revenge plan includes Aubree Culling, the wife behind the very Man who is responsible for everything.

“Anyone who injures their neighbor is to be injured in the same manner: fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth.”

Characterization, dark romance and heartbreaking story

Nick, our protagonist is so broken, it hurt me. He is not only in physical pain but also in a crazy mental state of mind. He is hurt, he is lost, and because of that he became a monster. He killed people, he tormented them, he did things so vile one could get sick thinking about them.

I hated what I’d become. Thief. Kidnapper. Killer. Bastard.

The thing that kept Nick going was the thought of Vengeance ! The thought of killing and tormenting the people, who were the reason for the death of the family he loved. And so he fought his depression, and fueled his hatred towards the person who was responsible: Michael Culling. To hurt him as much as he was hurt, he kidnaps his wife Aubree. But with Aubree he finds a puzzle he can’t solve. A riddle that drives him to her and that makes him attentive and for the first time in a long time interested.

Aubree Culling has had her own share of pain. Her husband abused her in several sick and twisted ways and almost broke her beyond repair. But Aubree is a strong woman, she is one who doesn’t break so easily, not when her husband beat her to submission and not when she was kidnapped by this dangerous stranger. She was strength personified, living through it all and never once letting her spirit break. I truly was in awe of her.

Their love is so wrong and so twisted but at the same time so needed. For them both. Nick needed to know and to understand that he may be a sinner for the things he did, but he had the right to be loved. He needed to know that there was at least one person who welcomed his darkness and tackled it with love and hope. At the same time Aubree needed Nick in order to feel safe. Safe from her abusive husband, safe in this horrendous, dangerous world and safe from the pain she felt all these years. They both loved the way two broken souls should: vigorously and passionately

This story is extremely heartbreaking and dark. There were several incidents where I had to stop reading to take a moment and calm myself. There were also scenes where I full blown out cried and felt sadness. This book is not for faint hearts. There are scenes so brutal and vile, the author doesn’t gloss over them but rather describes them vividly, so you can imagine and feel the pain and hatred and suffering. The author also describes sexual scenes and abusive ones with much detail, so definitely beware of that !

The ending was shocking to say the least. There was one major twist I didn’t see coming that was so disturbing (those of you who read the book will know of what I’m talking about). But it made so much sense and everything just started to klick.

Ricochet is a story of revenge. But it’s also so much more. It’s a story of unexpected twists and turns. A story of heartbreaking fragility. A story of darkness and salvation. It’s a story of second chances and love.

Trigger warnings: Sexual ,physical and emotional abuse. Brutal scenes, death, drugs, rape, and mental instability.
